A Dreamer

Among the many scourges of growing up, one is that it becomes increasingly difficult to dream. You wake up one day and you realize that the possibilities aren’t as endless anymore, that what is achievable is much limited by circumstance and opportunity, both of which are often unfavorable. The scope of what life could be narrows to present reality, beyond which it becomes progressively difficult to see, to imagine. The once vast sea of prospects dries up, leaving only little to choose from. And to dream any further starts to feel like naivety, like a waste. Because how feasible could it really be anyway?

But I’ve recently realized that dreams were always meant to be infeasible, impractical… that dreams were, in fact, meant to be diametrically opposed to reality. In fact, I think that one’s dreams and ambitions must supersede their current capacity to achieve them. That isn’t only because this could provide some solace in a reality that gets harder and harder to stand, but because it stretches the imagination to what is possible beyond the current reality and circumstance; it sits as a reminder that it could all be better, could be exactly how we’ve always wanted it to be.

Because the truth is the possibilities have always been, are now and will always be endless. Nothing is impossible, despite what realism would have you believe. The limitations of what is possible are only perceived, thus they can be stretched to whatever extents you wish. Possibility is limited to your own perception of it. Is that not incentive, then, to dream as wildly and broadly as possible?

The point being that nothing is factually impossible. Tomorrow, you could be anything, could be anywhere, doing absolutely anything. But you must think it possible first. Whatever your mind cannot conceive today cannot be reality tomorrow. So, it is imperative that you cultivate a culture of fully believing that possibility lies far beyond whatever your circumstances currently are, a culture of dreaming big. How far you can dream will play a vital role in how far you are going to go.

The dreams we scribble in the corners of our journals, those we bear in our minds, those we hold so dear to our hearts are inscribed somewhere in the scrolls of our fate. And even though it is improbable that all will come true, some definitely will. With time, chance and preparedness, some will come to fruition. Regardless of how ridiculous they may seem now, all our dreams are valid. They always have been. They always will be.

So, be brave enough to dream. Dream. Even with a reality that tends to stifle out dreams, dream boldly regardless. Dream beyond what seems plausible. Your dreams are valid. I, myself, am a dreamer. You should be too.
