You know, at a certain point, hope feels like naivety. It is possible to be so battered and beaten down by this life that hope and naïve, in our minds, become synonyms. It can get so monotonous, and each tomorrow starts to feel like a yesterday. And no matter how much we try to change it, it sometimes feels as though we are going in circles, getting started only end up at the same point. Sometimes to hope feels equivalent to... I don’t know, wishing on a lucky star or something.
But, you see, life is so uncertain that hope is all that we ever have. We really have nothing if not hope. Life is full of pitfalls with darkness at the bottom. It is full of blind turns across which we cannot see, full of seemingly endless tunnels, full of dark alleys. It is full of everything but certainty.
And even though in our souls crave certainty more than anything else, it is unattainable. And so I… we can only have hope. We can only continue to hope. We can only hope that there is a green patch at the bottom of the pit, that there is light at the end of the tunnel and a friendly smile on the other side of a blind turn. All we can have is hope that on the other end of all this uncertainty, something is indeed working in our favor, that it is all going to pan out okay.
Hope is not certainty. Hope is not assurance of anything at all. But hope is a start. And a start is good. So on your worst day, I wish that you too will find the strength to hope again…
For in this hope we were saved; but hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he can already see? Romans 8:24.
